Organize a Graduate Student Organization at Your School

The sought-after Atterberg Cup

Graduate students at any U.S. college or university, who are also individual student members of the Geo-Institute, are encouraged to form a Graduate Student Organization (GSO) at their university.

Members of GSOs must be active student members of the Geo-Institute. There are no dues requirements for GSOs. The GSO is, however, permitted to engage in appropriate activities to raise funds to support its activities.

Each GSO faculty advisor receives a GSO Membership Certificate and an appointment letter signed by the President of the Geo-Institute. The Geo-Institute Board, or its designated representative committee, may organize activities for student organizations at specialty conferences, ASCE annual conventions, or elsewhere, that involve paper competitions, professional education and similar activities. The Geo-Institute will have a link from its homepage to the GSO's homepage.

The function of local GSOs is the enhancement of the education of students who are preparing to become geo-professionals. These organizations engage in activities of their choice as long as such activities do not violate the code of ethics of the Geo-Institute.

Geotechnical Engineering Photo Album

G-I members Mike Duncan and Ross Boulanger have developed an educational web site, the " Geotechnical Engineering Photo Album," that serves as a supplement for available text books. A wide range of topics are illustrated using sequences of photos or diagrams. Faculty members can use the images to illustrate topics in courses. Students can use the web site to get a visual feel beyond what textbooks provide. Mike and Ross plan to continually update the site.
