G-I NewsGEO-INSTITUTEResolution 99-01Endorsing the First Professional Degree Whereas, it is the Mission of the Geo-Institute to "...integrate the talents and perspectives of individual geo-professionals to:
Whereas, for the past half-century, it has been often recognized that a Master's degree in the specialty of geotechnical engineering has been a prerequisite for the professional practice of geotechnical engineering; and Whereas, the Geo-Institute recognizes that the civil engineering profession, of which geotechnical engineering is a subset, is undergoing significant, rapid, and revolutionary changes making post-baccalaureate education necessary for the practice of civil engineering at the professional level; and Whereas, The Board of Direction of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) adopted ASCE Policy Statement 465, First Professional Degree, on October 17, 1998. Therefore, be it Resolved that the Board of Governors of the Geo-Institute hereby endorses ASCE Policy Statement 465, First Professional Degree; and Be it Further Resolved that the Geo-Institute hereby pledges to join ASCE in encouraging institutions of higher education, governmental units, employers of civil engineers, and other appropriate organizations to endorse, support, and promote the concept of mandatory post-baccalaureate education for the practice of civil engineering at the professional level.
