GEO-INSTITUTE POSITION STATEMENT ON CODES, STANDARDS, AND GUIDELINESWhereas, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is the preeminent organization representing the technical practice of civil engineering in the United States and the Geo-Institute (G-I), a semi-autonomous institute of ASCE, is one of the leading technical organizations of responsible professionals in the geo-industry; andWhereas, the G-I recognizes that codes, standards, and guidelines are vital to the profession in delivering quality materials, products, and services and protecting public safety; and Whereas, the profession must shoulder the ethical and professional responsibility to prepare and adopt codes, standards, and guidelines; and Whereas, while the G-I advocates that the consensus process used to develop codes, standards, and guidelines must take advantage of the viewpoints and knowledge and experience of the stakeholders for any code, standard, or guideline, the application of each code, standard, and guideline is the responsibility of practicing professionals in that field. Therefore be it resolved, that the G-I will develop codes, standards, and guidelines, as it deems appropriate, and will assess, recognize and/or reject codes, standards, and guidelines prepared by other organizations.
