G-I Chapters and Local Geotechnical Groups

As a 21st Century professional organization, the G-I aims to collaborate with local, national, and international geo-professional organizations. To meet that goal, the G-I has developed a strategic plan for outreach to local geotechnical groups to assist them in becoming a Geo-Institute Chapter. Refer to the information below.

If your section or branch geotechnical group or G-I Chapter has an upcoming event, announcement, correction, or suggestions for this page, please send it to Linda Bayer, Geo-Institute manager.

East Central Florida and St. Louis Become New G-I Chapters on
June 3, 2009.

How to Become a G-I Institute Chapter for Non-Geotechnical Group Section/Branch Members

The creation of new Geo-Institute Chapters within Sections and Branches is strongly encouraged by ASCE. The initiative for affiliation should come from interested Section/Branch Geotechnical Groups. The documents below provide the details about creating a viable and effective Geo-Institute Chapter within a Section/Branch that does not have a corresponding Geoechnical Group.

How to Convert an Existing Section or Branch Technical Group into a New Institute Chapter

The affiliation of Section/Branch Geotechnical Groups with the Geo-Institute is strongly encouraged by ASCE. The initiative for affiliation should come from the Geotechnical Group leaders. Here are the recommended procedures to convert a Technical Group into a viable and effective Geo-Institute Chapter.

Geo-Institute Speakers Bureau

The purpose of this site is to provide members of the Geo-Institute, including local Sections and Branches, with a database of G-I members who are willing to make presentations about specific geotechnical topics.

Geotechnical Practice Publications

Geotechnical Practice Publications (GPPs) offer the opportunity for sections/branches to publish proceedings to a larger audience using a shorter, less restrictive peer review process as compared to Geotechnical Specialty Publications (GSPs).  Contact Carol Bowers, the G-I Director, at 703-295-6352 for additional information.

Join a Geo-Institute Technical Committee

The Geo-Institute Technical Coordination Council invites all G-I members to apply for membership on one of the G-I technical committees. All geo-professionals, including new and younger members, and geo-professionals from local sections and branches of ASCE, are encouraged to participate. Technical committee members are expected to participate in committee activities and attend at least one committee meeting during the time of appointment.

ASCE Task Committee on Institute Affiliation with Local Groups

In January 2003, ASCE's Executive Committee established a task committee charged with defining the range of relationships that will be available for the Institutes to establish with Sections and Branches. The Task Committee addressed how ASCE Institute members can be served by Institutes partnering with Sections and Branches, their technical groups and other allied organizations.
