September/October 2011 - Earthquake Geotechnics

The articles in this issue bring together a variety of topics. Timely response to disasters is not only important to immediate recovery and saving lives, but also to gaining valuable information which can be utilized to assist in future preparedness, better planning, and improved design and response mechanisms. Jon Bray, David Frost, and Ellen Rathje describes the efforts of GEER and how they have been able to accomplish this through an organized group of volunteer members willing to jump at a moment's notice to respond to a disaster anywhere in the world. David Baska and Alex Tang's article describes the performance that their infrastructure survey team encountered following the recent earthquakes in New Zealand. While there is much interest and intense concern about the next "Big One" in California or the Pacific Northwest, perhaps overlooked are the regions with less regular seismic activity such as the East Coast. Read all about it in this issue.
